The night’s other heart-heater is the true story of a Chicago priest, played by Louis Gossett Jr., who adopts a boy from a bad home, Malcolm-Jamal (Cosby) Warner. Gossett has to fight the reluctance of his parishioners to take in homeless children and the resistance of his cardinal, played by Carroll O’Connor, but of course Gossett wins. So the story and the characters are drawn simplistically. So? The Father Clements Story is a touching Christmas-season bonbon. And by the way, we get a fine performance from Warner—better than any you’ll see on Lisa Bonet’s show. Malcolm’s the one Cosby should have spun off.
