Lifetime (Saturday, Aug. 19, 9 p.m. ET)

This movie starring American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino as herself caused a tiny blip of controversy shortly after review copies were sent out last month. Idol producers were reportedly depicted as trying to pressure the unwed mother to quit the wholesome competition. It doesn’t quite play that way. The film, subtitled Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, starts with Fantasia in her Idol dressing room as two show reps suggest, with the cringing insipidness of courtiers in the presence of Catherine the Great, that she can leave if she wants to. Weird scene. The rest of the movie has that same wilting clumsiness. Fantasia, who one assumes is a woman of will and resilience, displays neither, just passive endurance. If Taylor Hicks makes a movie like this, I’ll just die.
