José Carreras, Pládcido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti with Zubin Mehta

Four years after their smash 1990 Rome concert, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti finally reconvened in July in Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium and got the full—garish—Hollywood treatment. The bonhomie among the three T’s was palpable, and they were in fine voice. But when they strayed from the classical repertoire of Verdi, Puccini and Massenet, the event, which has now been released on video and compact disc, seemed under-rehearsed, musically sloppy and downright patronizing to listeners. Theirs was mostly an overwrought tribute to Hollywood, featuring “Moon River,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and “My Way.” Equally overheated was an “Around the World” medley including “Funiculì, Funiculà,” “Be My Love” and “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera. These opera superstars shouldn’t be bothering with Phantom. Bring on “Brindisi.” (Atlantic)
