Not quite so murky in its intentions as Luis Buñuel’s past films, this newest offering shows that the Spanish director remains fascinated with psychological sleight of hand. Fernando Rey is Mathieu, a wealthy Frenchman who can have anything—except what he really wants, a Spanish girl named Conchita. She is so elusive and her moods so changeable that Mathieu is never quite sure just whom he is pursuing. Neither is the audience: different actresses play the two faces of Conchita—Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina. Between them, they convincingly portray the classical tease. In French with English subtitles. (R)
