Not everyone can get away with singing lines like “Rub me down in some hot oils, baby/And I’ll do the same thing to you” without being laughable. Pendergrass does, though he’s not always operating with much of a margin. This, his third solo LP, is a mixture of bachelor pad ballads—All I Need Is You is a nice example—and some mild disco, including the relatively easygoing Life Is a Circle. His devotees will undoubtedly like it, but Teddy might sound sexier if he didn’t try so hard. Even Donna Summer learned quickly that the sounds of passion tend to be funny, not titillating.
