by Malcolm Boyd

In 1976 Episcopal priest-poet Malcolm Boyd (Are You Running with Me, Jesus?) announced to the world that he was gay. Now he has written an autobiography, revealing, among other things, “As a sexually mature gay, I can look back on those rites that took place in the privacy of the frat house and recognize them…for what they were—exercises in homosexual sadomasochism and voyeurism.” For years after college he avoided sex, but after attending seminary he found “gays who were hard hats, business figures, professors, clerks, authors, priests, athletes…I was astonished and delighted.” At 33 he fell in love for the first time, with a German monk. Since then the 55-year-old Boyd has had secret affairs, and now he lives openly with a man named John. The details of homosexual lovemaking are explicit. (Doubleday, $7.95)
