Buyers of books about dieting, like cat-book lovers, apparently are infinite in number. So when Field, a TV science editor and co-host of the syndicated Not for Women Only, began taking weight off right in front of millions of viewers, he was asked to put his secret on paper. The result is repetitive but sensible. Menus and recipes take a dieter through 30 stomach-rumbling days. Included are some letters from viewers who thought Field looked “gaunt” and seemed “testy” after he lost 16 pounds. He thinks he looks great. Field’s advice: “Don’t gulp down your food” and “Keep one hand in your lap throughout the meal.” The tone throughout is that of a mother talking to her fat teenager. (Morrow, $6.95)
