Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell

Minus the flashback and fantasy scenes, which serve roughly the same purpose here that bread does in a meat loaf mix, Superstar would be about five minutes long. That sounds about the right length to me.

Like such predecessors as Cone-heads and It’s Pat, this dumb comedy is a movie spinoff from a character popularized on TV’s Saturday Night Live. Mary Katherine Gallagher (Shannon) is the klutzy, panty-flashing Catholic schoolgirl who longs to be popular. In Superstar, she enters a school talent show. End of plot. Shannon is an appealing performer, and Gallagher is the niftiest female character to come out of SNL since Lisa Loopner, but Superstar lacks sparkle. (PG-13)

Bottom Line: Gallagher yes, Superstar no
