Sept. 8, 1966. That date in the Star Log marks the prime-time premiere of the most enduring science-fantasy TV series of all time. (Even now, there’s talk that Paramount may revive the movie franchise. That started in 1979.) If there were some way we could weigh the gray matter of Trek‘s late creative genius Gene Roddenberry against, say, that of Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s Larry David, the result would probably favor Mr. David; it takes more inspiration to create a great joke than to conceive an alternate universe. But Star Trek is indelible, not only with its generous gift of pop references, but also in its benign cosmic faith and innocence. Live long and prosper.
