Andy Serkis The creepy looks of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings are computer-generated, but the motions and raspy voice of the corrupt critter were provided by Briton Andy Serkis, 39, a dad of two who used rock-climbing skills to create Gollum’s crouched gait.
ON FINDING HIS MUSE “The inspiration came from watching my cats. When they got fur trapped in their throats or were sick, they threw up. They’d go, ‘Uhwharp, uhwharp; and that became ‘Gollum, Gollum.’ My cats all died, but their spirits literally live on.”
ON DOING THE VOICE OFF CAMERA “My family wants to kill me. They’ve had it with Gollum’s voice. I do get a lot of fans who ask me to do phone messages on their mobiles.”
ON FILMING WITH HOBBITS “I wore a white suit for shooting on location. At first I think Sean [Astin] and Elijah [Wood] thought, ‘What the hell?’ They were in costume and then there’s a lunatic in a white spandex suit crawling around their ankles. It was a shock for them to see Gollum onscreen.”
