Soulive is not your average jazz band. A trio on guitar, drums and Hammond B3 organ (an instrument that screams ’60s retro), they favor danceable, groove-heavyjams, thumping bass lines and frenetic energy. Break Out, their sixth album, brings on the funk so strong it’s probably illegal in a dozen states. Aided by Chaka Khan on the Rufus-like “Back Again” and abetted by a crisp horn section, Soulive’s mix of Sly Stone-esque riffs, instrumental originals and Hendrix intensity keeps things both entertaining and tight.
