Charley Pride

The only thing unlikable about Charley is that he sounds so stubbornly likable; nobody is that sincere. Still, his records have an easygoing magnetism. The title tune of this one is the hit, but equally pleasing are Pride versions of other singers’ clicks: Georgia Keeps Pulling on My Ring; Play, Guitar, Play, Daydreams about Night Things. If the A&P supermarket chain was smart, it would hire somebody named Price—though Leontyne probably wouldn’t be appropriate—to do their commercials with Charley.
