Eddy Arnold

Arnold, 61, has sold about 80 million records since he made his first 78, Mommy Please Stay Home with Me, back in 1945. That puts him fourth in history, behind the Beatles, Elvis and Bing Crosby. The ranking is also a tribute to a style that makes Perry Como seem hyperactive. This LP is typical. Arnold sings soothingly—not too passionate on love songs (such as You’re a Beautiful Place to Be) and not too mournful even on a hurtin’ song, What in Her World Did I Do? The arrangements are tasteful; the voice is still sweet. Listening to Arnold is like hearing a friend tell an old story you’ve enjoyed a hundred times before.
