Bobby Womack

He’s played guitar for Sam Cooke, Joe Tex and Aretha Franklin, penned major hits for Wilson Pickett, the Rolling Stones and George Benson. Bobby Womack has done everything but collect the acclaim his contributions deserve. So Many Rivers should help him get some of that overdue attention. The LP is no world-beater, just a typically fine collection. There are some high times here, such as the funky shuffle of the title track. But the best tunes are the ballads Got To Be With You Tonight and the soul-stirring That’s Where It’s At. So Many Rivers is uncluttered and satisfying. If the pushiness of rap is getting on your nerves, try this. It’s like a nice chat with an old friend. (MCA)
