Walker is a nom de plume probably for a team of whimsical people who obviously had a lot of fun compiling this book. It is shaped like a sneaker box and stuffed with lore on the subject. For example, that there’s a sneaker museum in the Bavarian mill town of Herzgenaurach. Or that you can have your old favorites cast in bronze for $40. And that the word “sneaker” is derived from “snaca,” Old English for “snake.” The book has nice drawings and funny photos and is totally impertinent, unpertinent and entertaining. (Workman, $3.95)
