Silver Spurz Orchestra

Here is the album for those jostled dancers waiting for an opportunity to say to some show-off, “This disco ain’t big enough for both of us.” It’s a collection of disco-arranged cowboy tunes—Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Back in the Saddle Again and Cool Water. Fortunately, Trigger isn’t alive to hear Happy Trails. The band is a bunch of studio musicians who probably have never been west of Nashville, but musically the LP is inoffensive, even if there is, on Cowboy, a wild non sequitur: a woman singer doing an imitation of Barbra Streisand. (Janie Fricke, a fine mimic, is a backup vocalist on the album, but because of her contract cannot be credited with a lead role. Nobody is saying if it’s she.) Undeniably, one can dance to the album—not to mention gallop, form the wagons into a circle or kiss a horse.
