Shaquille O’Neal

The Orlando Magic’s all-star center may be the NBA Rookie of the Year, but when it comes to slam-dunking rhymes, O’Neal could use some practice. This disc has its moments, but they come most often when he lets his homies take the mike. On the lyrical tip, Shaq’s not half bad, especially on the rowdy “What’s Up, Doc? (Can We Rock)” accompanied by the nimble Fu Schnickens. Shaq’s subjects center on himself: his larger-than-life size (“I lean on the Statue of Liberty when I get tired”) and salary, his endorsements, his talents both on and off the court. This mix of basketball and hip hop could start a trend—imagine, Onyx and Charles Barkley—but Hey, Shaq! Don’t quit your day job. (JIVE)”
