Even at 85, nobody does Mae West better than Mae West. Sextette is her long-awaited boudoir musical, based on one of her 1920s stage plays. It concerns a movie superstar whose sixth honeymoon is constantly interrupted by ex-husbands, lovers, business managers, singing waiters, the entire United States Athletic Team and an international summit meeting. Groping across the generations, the cast includes Ringo Starr, Tony Curtis, George Hamilton, Alice Cooper and Dom De Luise, plus Mae’s contemporary, George Raft. Edith Head’s costumes push everything out and up, and West herself is shot through so much gauze that at times she seems lost in smog. It’s safe to assert already that this will be the campiest movie of 1978. (PG)
