“Same Love” is up for the Song of the Year Grammy. Surprised by its success?

It’s crazy how it reached a lot of people it normally wouldn’t have. When it hit hip-hop radio, I was like, “Wow, this is making a big impact.” That’s exciting!

What was your inspiration for writing the chorus?

This song is my story. I realized I was gay at 17, but it was a struggle reconciling my faith and sexuality. Apologizing for who you are can drive you crazy. I was made to write this song.

Has life changed since its release?

Massively! It’s given me a platform. I have important things to say, and I want to impact humanity in a positive way.
