The bright idea of teaming up the red-nosed reindeer and the round-bellied snowman dims considerably in the execution. Padded with ho-hummable songs by Johnny Marks and enough head-scratching plot from writer Romeo Muller to rival The Maltese Falcon, this videotape makes for a tortoise-paced 90 minutes. Since this is another Animagic production, the characters appear to move, sort of. Mostly they strike poses while an odd assemblage of celebrity voices (Mickey Rooney, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons) over-enunciate like mad to give the illusion of action. The ploy doesn’t work. By the time all the characters are plopped into a summer circus run by a cowgirl (the trumpet-tonsilled Ethel Merman), few will care if Rudy’s light goes out or Frosty and his family melt in the July heat. On second thought the tape might come in handy for parents who can’t get kids to nap during the holidays. Just a few minutes of Christmas in July should produce instant torpor.
