There’s a little bit of everything in this year’s Album of the Year candidates: country-rock (Dixie Chicks), soulful electronica (Gnarls Barkley), bluesy pop (Mayer), alt-rock (Chili Peppers) and R&B/dance (Timberlake). A case could be made for each nominee, with the exception of Mayer, whose Continuum is a solid but unspectacular effort. But in the end, it comes down to the Chili Peppers and JT. We’d be happy to see sentimental faves the Chili Peppers win for an ambitious double disc that showed they’re getting better—and bolder—with age. Still, we’re backing Timberlake, who was nominated in this category three years ago for Justified. Sometimes futuristic, always sexy, he rocked our bodies even more this time around.
