Rachel Sweet

Following her arrival as a punk princess last year, Sweet is already threatening to outgrow the genre at 17. This album does include some typical, pellmell primitivism with Tonight, Jealous, Foul Play and the throbbing Fool’s Gold, but she shows a sense of humor, too, on an almost whispered pseudoseduction number, Tonight Ricky. She also demonstrates considerable musical subtlety on Lou Reed’s brooding, down-tempo New Age. Sweet, who had to detour from her native Akron to England before she became a success in the U.S. with Fool Around, has the talent to escape the obsolescence of her punk peers.
