After showing Broadway plenty of sumthin’ for 16 weeks, Sherwin M. Goldman and the Houston Grand Opera’s definitive production of the George Gershwin classic is on the road, this week in L.A. Wilhelmenia Fernandez is a rich-voiced Bess, as simmering as the departed Clamma Dale. Other leading denizens of Catfish Row (the vocal demands of this operatic version require alternating casts) survive from the original: Donnie Ray Albert and Robert Mosley as Porgy, Andrew Smith and George Robert Merritt as Crown, and Larry Marshall as a spiffy Sportin’ Life.
