No problem keeping them down on the farm after they’ve seen this. The considerable talents of James Earl Jones, his taste for TV perhaps whetted by his fine performance in Roots: The Next Generations, are wasted by a standard cops-and-drama script so plodding it gives new meaning to the term flatfoot. Jones has been turned into a black version of a Kojak who eats peanuts instead of Tootsie Pops while solving-the-big-case-under-political-pressure. The audience knows whodunnit within the first 15 minutes. The only mystery is how many weeks into the TV season Jones can carry a melodrama with no suspense.
