This is a cynical novel with no good-guy hero—just a group of unpleasant, murderous, corrupt wheeler-dealers who have made fortunes out of the misfortune of Vietnam. Ultimately the profiteers—an ex-CIA man, an ex-cop, a senator, the Vice-President of the U.S. and several sinister suppliers of vicious weaponry—turn on one another. That produces some suspense and a moral of sorts: Crime does pay and murder is perfectly okay if revenge is the motive. (Viking, $8.95)
