Kellie Martin may come across as a Girl Scout in her series roles (Christy, Crisis Center), but for TV movies she delivers more of an edge. She was a drug addict in last year’s Her Last Chance, and here she’s a 17-year-old manic-depressive whose mother (Karen Young) commits her to an institution after Martin skips her medication, goes on a tear and winds up dangling from a Ferris wheel.
Martin is convincing as an alarmingly mercurial personality, but this melodrama is less interested in characterization than in screaming matches, desperate clinches and breathless chases. When the shrink-in-chief (Kevin Dunn) tries to break up Martin’s romance with a hunky fellow patient (James Marsden), the lovers take it on the lam. After episodes of sex, violence and reckless driving, the road leads them to another Ferris wheel. Wouldn’t a roller coaster have made a better metaphor?
