Jimmie Mack

New York-born urban rocker Jimmie Mack is a competent guitarist and lyricist (“Drank a bottle of wine alone, and by myself to boot/Fell down 20 steps and landed in a wino’s suit”) whose songs are saved from sounding like typical AM fare by mildly complex arrangements and brief excursions into Latin rhythms (Subway) and jazz (Lover). But Mack’s best feature is a dusky, compelling voice that sounds a little like Joe Cocker trying to stay within the audible distortion range. This is a good journeyman second effort after Jimmie Mack, his 1978 debut LP.
