American Pie 2
Same old gang, new gross-out jokes. Not as sweet nor as filling as the first Pie. (R)

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion
Woody Allen continues to work in miniature, turning out another pleasant, minor caper comedy. Allen and Helen Hunt hold center stage as squabbling coworkers at an insurance agency in 1940s Manhattan. (PG-13)

The Deep End
Solid thriller features a beautifully controlled performance by Tilda Swinton as a mother who, after finding the corpse of her teenage son’s male lover, does all she can to divert suspicion from her boy. (R)

Rat Race
Goofy, silly fun, especially after this summer’s dismal offerings. Contestants, including Jon Lovitz and Whoopi Goldberg, take part in a wacky race to win $2 million. (PG-13)
