Picks and Pans Review: Norman Rockwell's Breaking Home Ties
ABC (Thurs., Nov. 26, 9 p.m. ET)
Norman Rockwell paintings are not exactly filled with passion, pathos and gritty reality. So what can you expect from a TV movie that was inspired by one such Rockwell picture? Wimperie, that’s what. Very still life. Breaking Home Ties begins with a scene of a boy and his pa, sittin’ ‘n’ waitin’ for a train. Doug (On Golden Pond) McKeon is the all-Americana boy, a twerp who’s going to college. While he’s off learning the hard facts of life—like how many students it takes to fill a phone booth—Jason Robards as Pa is back in their chronically quaint hometown, aw-shucksing it up in his ol’ pickup truck. Meanwhile—and here’s the plot—Eva Marie Saint as Ma is dying. How appropriate that, for Thanksgiving, ABC gives us a turkey.
