With Teeth

“I’ m afraid I am starting to fade away,” wails Trent Reznor on the ripping rocker “Getting Smaller.” Indeed, it has been six long years since Reznor’s virtual one-man band, Nine Inch Nails, released its last studio album, 1999’s double-platinum The Fragile. But Reznor comes back with a vengeance on the biting, often-brilliant With Teeth. Clearly ready to let” loose some pent-up frustration, Reznor brings industrial-strength intensity to pile drivers like the grinding title track. The multi-instrumentalist also delivers beautifully melancholic moments like “Every Day Is Exactly the Same” (one of six cuts featuring Dave Grohl on drums), which sounds like Coldplay on steroids. And the killer dance-rocker “Only,” with its ’80s-style synths, is better than anything the neo-new wave brigade has to offer. A near-masterpiece, this is the hard-rock disc to beat in 2005.
