Venus Dodson

Dodson, 27, is arriving relatively late in discoland. Having started to sing at her grandma’s bar in Fayetteville, N.C. when she was a 3-year-old, she has since written tunes for such performers as Hank Ballard (post-Midnighters), sung backup with Major Harris and Herbie Mann and toured—as dancer and drummer—with the Nigerian folk art troupe of Olatunji. Those influences occasionally show through on this more-disciplined-than-usual disco LP—perhaps less on the hit title tune than on the more sophisticated He Said, She Said. Though the string and brass arrangements are dull, the album is more than serviceable for dancing and, as Dodson’s first solo recording, it is promising.
