>SCHOOL’S OUT by Johanna Hurwitz

THIS TIMELY book begins with the end of Lucas Cott’s third-grade class—and arrival of his mom’s French au pair. The “oh pear,” as Lucas thinks of her, is on hand to help Mrs. Cott with her 2-year-old twins. “At first,” says Kate Carcaterra, 9, “Lucas thinks having a French lady around is silly. But she’s kinda fun.” The au pair, by the way, is named Genevieve—a mouthful for an American third grader to read. Otherwise, Kate says, the book is “great.” (Morrow, $12.95; ages 8-12)
