Adam Makowicz

In this set of Gershwin songs, Makowicz, the widely praised Polish émigré jazz pianist, offers cerebral readings of such relatively unknown tunes as the title track and My Man’s Gone Now (from Porgy and Bess), as well as more familiar material. Nobody is going to be pressed to ask if there’s a word for “funky” in Polish; Makowicz plays a tight, intense piano. What he lacks in soul, he and his sidemen (including Charlie Haden on bass) make up for in drama. The serious side of even such basically frivolous compositions as Fascinating Rhythm comes across in provocative fashion. (RCA)
