In a refreshing change for PBS’ Mystery series, the sleuth of the moment is not a doddering-but-devilishly-clever old gal or a weird-but-wise British dandy. He is John Thaw as Inspector Morse, a modern-day lonely guy, a big and gruff Oxford detective who drinks hard but also sings in a choir. The show’s mystery—which revolves around the suicide of a lonely gal pal of the Inspector’s—may be padded just a bit to fill two episodes over two weeks. But the ending—no, endings—are worth waiting for.
