by Becky Yancey with Cliff Linedecker

Now that Presley’s former bodyguards have had their say in the best-selling paperback Elvis: What Happened?, his longtime personal secretary is weighing in with her close-up observations of life at Graceland. Yancey was just another teenage fan when she met Presley at the Memphis Fairgrounds in 1961 and became his secretary. Until she quit in 1975 to raise a family, she was a member of the singer’s inner circle. There are stories about Elvis’ peculiar hours and eating habits—he would go all day without food, then wolf down three hamburgers at 4 a.m., for example—but there is little new here. The tone is almost reverential and more than vaguely reminiscent of a schoolgirl diary. For hardcore fans only. (St. Martin’s Press, $8.95)
