At times the flashbacks and sudden shifts from character to character make this mystery novel impossible to follow. It concerns three penniless filmmakers on location in London’s Chelsea. A series of hideous murders, preceded by silly poetic warnings and committed by someone in a grotesque costume from the movie, make police believe that one of the three is responsible. Though the kicky language and incredible gore are a far cry from the sedate puzzles of Agatha Christie, it is a distracting entertainment. (Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, $8.95)
