You know the old punch line: Poor kid—his parents moved away and didn’t even leave him a forwarding address. Sounds like a great idea for a movie. But it’s a great idea wasted here. A nice, normal dad gets tangled up in sinister business dealings and suddenly disappears lock, stock and family dog. Problem is, the message doesn’t get to his son, Jason (Valerie’s Family) Bateman, who’s off at music camp. So the chases begin as Jason tries to find his family, and as good guys and bad try to find Jason. The movie’s faults are not Bateman’s. He’s charming in an average sort of way. No, the problem is in the plot. The script doesn’t get to the story fast enough or know what to do once it gets there. This great idea was meant to be a half-hour sitcom. As a two-hour movie, it shows more stretch marks than the old lady in the shoe.
