The Kinks

Every mid-’60s English rock dinosaur still roaming record studios looking for a new contract should envy this comeback, which is quintessential Kinks—a timeless, fresh and lyrical collection. Lead vocalist Ray Davies’ voice is still watery, and he sings as if he has had the same heavy London cold for the past decade. But the Kinks still make finely crafted rock, with such occasional sardonic messages as the one in Foreign Land, a rocker about tax exile: “I grabbed up my cash / And I decided to dash / Far away far away far away to a foreign land.”
