>• A high school dropout, Michael J. Fox did most of his learning in the school of life. Who better to write a book of advice for grads?

WHY WRITE THIS BOOK?

Having just sent a kid to college and with two in high school, I’d been thinking about what constitutes an education.

HOW DID YOU GET YOURS?

I learned economics from being a struggling actor, physics from trying to do two things at once…. I’m a firm believer that you can learn in a structured or an unstructured way.

DID YOU EVER GET YOUR DIPLOMA?

When my son Sam was 4, he was shocked and appalled: “How come you didn’t finish school, Dad?” So I studied and passed my GED. My kids have a better work ethic than I ever had.

WILL THEY FOLLOW YOU INTO ACTING?

My little one, Esmé, is quite emphatic about it. One of my twins, Aquinnah, is an accomplished ballet dancer, and I could see Schuyler being an actor—she’s very funny. Sam wants no part; he’s much more introverted.

HOW’S YOUR HEALTH THESE DAYS?

I feel really great. By definition my [Parkinson’s] symptoms are progressing, but it’s slower than in the past. It’s kind of reached a plateau, which is nice. The more I take it easy, the better it is.

WILL YOU ACT AGAIN?

I’m open to it but not pursuing it actively. I’m managing a family with four kids—keeping busy. Everything is good.
