Making his dramatic series debut, Montel Williams hews close to his talk-show persona—stiff, humorless, annoyingly infallible—as a former Navy SEAL who is just starting out teaching general science in a poor urban high school. I suppose it would have been too much to expect him to wig out and do a Miss Jean Brodie number. The show’s supporting cast of troubled teens is attractive, even if their troubles aren’t, but the mind dozes off, just as it used to back in homeroom, whenever Williams appears.
