Some people just don’t understand that a joke can’t go on forever. It comes to a punch line, then it’s over. But Martin Mull’s gag about the history of white people seems to have no end—perhaps because it has no punch line. The joke started in 1985 with the first of six specials. Then it became a live show in 1987. Now it is a two-hour movie with Mull as a Geraldoprahue talk show host who comes to Ohio to mess up the dull American marriage of Mary Kay Place and Fred Willard. A shaggy dog.
