The Olympics are about to begin. Which means, thankfully, that the hype is about to end. Yes, there’ll be some things missing this year: the East German muscle queens, the weighty Russian weight lifters and most of those perfect little East European gymnasts. But there’s plenty left—perhaps too much. ABC is covering these Olympics as if they were the Second Coming…and the Third and the Fourth. The extravaganza begins with not one, but two, specials. Then come the opening ceremonies. Then, finally, the Games begin on July 29 (ending Aug. 12). Altogether there’ll be 180 hours of coverage, more than 10 hours per day, a definite overdose of sweat and pluck. Here’s a guide to help you pick and choose your viewing.
