The Beach Boys

While the uncharitable will suggest that the initials stand for More Innocuous than Usual, they in fact are a dedication to the Maharishi International University, an Iowa institute of spirituality that several of the Boys periodically attend. The title aside, the LP’s only quasi-mystical references are in one song, Winds of Change (“Worlds in motion endlessly/Cosmic ocean flows into my heart”). Otherwise it is the Beach Boys as usual: high harmonies, dip doo-aahs, simple chord changes and bubblegum lyrics (“Everything is wrong and nothing is right/I want you back with all my might”). Their fans will like it and be heartened by the rehabilitation of Brian Wilson, who composed eight of the cuts. But others will wish the band would stay out of states where the surf doesn’t run.
