Kristy McNichol plays a poor kid who has dyslexia, ends up in reform school but then learns to read and becomes a doctor. The kid deserves a pat on the back, not a movie. The script is filled with smarmy, sophomoric sap: “Come on, Mary, give the system a chance.” The story, though true, lacks drama, and its chronology leaps along like a broken-down Beetle with a bad clutch. Kristy and her cast try hard to give the material life, but this movie was DOA.
