Frances O’Conner, Alice Garner

This bouncy Australian comedy is noteworthy mainly because Emma-Kate Croghan, its 23-year-old director and cowriter (she’s now 24), shot it in three weeks for $30,000. A cute trifle, Love concerns the college careers and love lives of five Melbourne students, one of whom boasts, “I believe in trying everything at least once, except incest and folk dancing.” Of its young cast, Matt Day bears a sharp resemblance to a stripling Mel Gibson.
