>The comedian, 48, kicks off his new late-night talk show Nov. 9 on TBS.

WHY DO A TALK SHOW?

I was inspired by campaigning with Barack Obama and that message of inclusiveness and diversity. It’s time for that change to come to TV.

WHAT’S THE VIBE?

Twenty years ago, when I was on The Arsenio Hall Show, it was hip, it was happening, it was inclusive. I mean, I was on with Mel Gibson and Ice-T.

WHO’S YOUR TALK SHOW HERO?

I think Johnny Carson was the baddest of all, back in the day. Brother sat there with clothes that are actually back in style now—an ascot. I’d like to rock the ascot one night.

WILL THINGS EVER GET SERIOUS?

I’d love to make somebody cry. I think Taylor Lautner’s coming on. I may show him pictures of him I have when he was 12 and we did [The Adventures of] Shark Boy and Lavagirl together.
