Picks and Pans Review: Linda Ronstadt
Hummin’ to Myself
This vital, roundly enjoyable cabaret jazz album touches on some of the less explored corners of the great American songbook. Backed by such splendid players as Roy Hargrove on flugelhorn, Ronstadt expressively sings old gems like “I Fall in Love Too Easily” and the classic lament “Cry Me a River.” Ronstadt is in great voice throughout; her musical intelligence is especially evident in how cozily she wraps herself around Cole Porter’s “Miss Otis Regrets” and “Get Out of Town,” finding all the sly humor in those marvelously inventive songs.
