Keith Sweat

It’s been eight years and one or two creative failures since Sweat’s Top 5 hit “I Want Her” spawned new jack swing, but Sweat’s fifth and best album puts him back on track. “Nobody” might have been just another silly love song if its sinuous-synth slowburn weren’t so darn hot. And Sweat isn’t the only flame in town. Ronald Isley wraps his luscious tenor around “Come with Me” with spiritual abandon, and Gerald Levert’s guttural baritone on “Funky Dope Lovin’ ” provides a nice counterpoint to Sweat’s sleepy, nasal croon. Now and then, Sweat’s libidinous muse fails him, yet he scores bonus points for making lyrics like “Yumi, yumi, yum/ Come and give me some” sound so mmm, mmm good. (Elektra)
