The Transcendence star talks about her leading men, her famous family and her shocking exit from House of Cards

You got to work with an all-star cast. Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman … what was everyone like?

Morgan’s lovely. We were shooting in New Mexico, and during the summer it was pretty intense out in the desert. He was a total team player. Cillian [Murphy] is a friend of mine, so that was like the cherry on top to get to work with him. And Johnny … I met him in the makeup trailer for a second. We don’t have any scenes together, so I still don’t really know him [laughs].

Your character Bree is a terrorist fighting artificial intelligence. Are you much of a techie yourself?

I’m not very techie, but Twitter is pretty addictive. It’s a great way to connect with fans, and I try and read most of their responses. It seems like mostly House of Cards people. Dylan O’Brien [from MTV’s Teen Wolf] is a good friend of mine, and he has a crazy teen following. I wouldn’t mind getting a few more teenage fans, but I’m not on Teen Wolf … maybe Fantastic Four will bring me a few.

Your House of Cards character Zoe Barnes was killed off in the first episode this season. How did you keep it a secret?

They paid me [laughs] ! Only my parents and my sister knew. When I run into people on the street, they tell me how sad they are that I’m dead. It’s very funny to hear, especially when people don’t know what we’re talking about, and they’re like, “Why are you saying this to this girl!”

You come from a big family. Are you closest to your sister [actress Rooney Mara]?

It’s easy to be close with the one girl in the family, but I’m also very close with my [two] brothers. My sister lived with me when she first moved here, and then our youngest brother moved here and lived with us. Nothing’s really changed since I was little. We talk about football [her great-grandparents founded the Giants and the Steelers], movies…. Nothing’s really off-limits.

You’ve been vegan for a couple of years. Do you cook a lot?

If I’m on location, I do. But I’m not a good cook, so I wouldn’t subject anyone else to it [laughs]. Even if I’m eating really healthy, I let myself indulge with french fries. That’s my favorite thing. You only live once!
