It’s described as “a completely new novel based on characters created in Jaws.” Yet Searls is dog-paddling in original author Peter Benchley’s wake, using not only the survivors from the first book but also the same plot pattern. This time the “force of nature” is a great white shark even larger and meaner—and pregnant. She starts out by eating a doctor and a lawyer instead of a lonely girl swimmer. The climax occurs when all the boys from Amity, including Chief Brady’s sons, are out racing sailboats. The monster attacks…Bantam is printing 1.4 million copies. The movie is due in June. But don’t expect beach house rentals to be any cheaper this season. (Bantam, $2.25)
